In 2009, Garibaldi Glass submitted the first samples for the fritted glass to be used in the new Juneau Alaska Transportation Centre. Three years later we finally have pictures of the project. It was a very enjoyable challenge, determining the right way to convert historic photographs (the size of postcards) of Juneau in the early part of the 20th century into high resolution, wall sized, sealed units.

Through innovative design work, the images are clearly visible from the exterior, yet those on the inside looking out have a relatively clear view of the surrounding street.

Congratulations to the City & Borough of Juneau and NorthWind Architects for a very successful project.

Glass Magazine Names 2011 Crystal Achievement Award Winners
WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 7, 2011

Glass Magazine has announced its 2011 Crystal Achievement Award winners. Selected by a panel of judges representing all segments of the glass industry, the awards recognize the best products and glass applications the commercial, retail and fabrication markets have to offer.

“The level of competition this year … shows a tremendous effort within our industry to continue to push the boundaries, while still providing quality on all levels to satisfy the architectural community, as well as building ownership,” says 2011 Crystal Achievement Award Judge Les Young, project manager, W&W Glass LLC, Nanuet, N.Y.

“I’m really glad to see the unique qualities of glass being used in so many different ways,” says fellow Judge John Stephenson, design director, Richard Wittschiebe Hand Architects, Atlanta. “It is great to know the [glass industry’s] innovation, technology and special expertise is continuing at a rapid pace.”

Robson Square rink re‐opens in time for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver on November 23, 2009.

The facility has been temporarily renamed GE Plaza to reflect the $700,000 that GE, one of the Olympics’ top sponsors, contributed largely to the renovation process. It helped buy a new refrigeration plant, expand the rink by more than a third, and install energy‐efficient LED lights. The name will remain until the end of the Paralympic Games in March.

The refurbishment is part of a much larger $40.9‐million rebuild of Robson Square, which includes repair of numerous underground membranes, water features and landscaping. Of that, $11 million was spent on repair of the so‐called Lower Robson Square, where the arena is located.

The team of Garibaldi Glass Industries, Lami Glass, and Superior Glass supplied, fabricated and installed the glass on the dual roof project. The roof glass supplied was a mixture of spandrel and vision tempered panels consisting of 6mm Pilkington Activ and 6mm Advantage Low E with fade out dot Ceramic Frit applied where specified. Each pair of panels was unique and assigned to a specific position within the dome. The panels were laminated by Lami Glass using 090 clear XX. Superior Glass was the on site Contract Glazer.

The skating area is the centrepiece of a large government and corporate presence during the 2010 Winter Games. On one side of the oval will be the International Media Centre, a facility for unaccredited journalists from around the world. On the other side will be provincial hosting facility and a showcase of B.C. industry. GE will also have a pavilion there.

To christen the ice, the Province of British Columbia and GE brought in Canadian Olympian Jeffrey Buttle, who won a bronze in figure skating at the 2006 Turin Games. In front of about 100 dignitaries and media he delicately carved the ice with his skates. Later, the arena was turned over to two dozen skaters from the Vancouver Skating Club, who danced and raced and circled around the small oval.

John Furlong, the chief executive of the Vancouver Organizing Committee, hailed the reopening of the arena.

“I think it is perfectly located to take advantage of the energy of the city, and of course it is here for the long term,” he said.

“A Project like the Robson Rink roof is just another example of Garibaldi Glass fabrication capabilities when innovative solutions are required,” says Paul Tendeck, Sales Manager at Garibaldi Glass.

During the 2010 Winter Games the Vancouver Olympic Centre, at Hillcrest Park was home to curling and wheelchair curling events.

This state‐of‐the‐art legacy facility is currently undergoing conversion from its role as curling and wheelchair curling competition venue. Once complete it will boast a new community centre, ice rink, curling club, library, preschool, field house and offices. Being built at the same time and attached to the curling venue is a new destination aquatic centre with indoor and outdoor pools.

The indoor/outdoor aquatic centre opened in summer 2010 while the remainder of the facility will open in 2011.

The facility features a 50 meter lap pool, swim and dive tanks and moveable floor, a leisure pool, seasonal outdoor pool, 70‐person hot pool, steam room and sauna. It replaces the existing community centre, rink and pool at Riley Park. The Centre is expected to attract more than 800,000 visitors a year.

At Garibaldi Glass we were especially proud to be part of this project. The building has a great look inside and out, and is another great addition to the Vancouver community.
